Black Friday + HEAR rebate = Dramatic Savings

(Like $1640 off an electric stove, for example!)

IIf you have been thinking about replacing your gas-powered stove, gas-powered oven, gas-powered water heater, and/or gas-powered clothes dryer with newer, more energy efficient electric models, then next week may just be the perfect time to do it.

Let’s take a look at the two elements that are coming into alignment for the first time in Wisconsin history:

1.) It’s Black Friday

Black Friday started as a sales gimmick after Thanksgiving. It’s allegedly the day that retailers go “into the black” after supposedly operating at a loss for the first 11 months of the year. These days it feel like it’s spread across the entire week and beyond. In fact, it may already be happening. Are these real savings on energy efficient appliances? Perhaps. You may be able to take advantage of some savings on Energy Star-certified electric appliances. Just make sure they’re eligible for the next element, to fully realize the savings…

2.) The IRA HEAR program

You can learn more about the IRA HEAR program on our HEAR 101 page. But, to summarize: if you’re eligible (most people are), you can receive up to $14,000 in rebates for energy efficient, electric appliances. In the context of Black Friday, you can apply the rebate to:

  • electric ovens and cooktops, including induction (up to $840)
  • heat pump clothes dryers (up to $840)

Getting the rebate will mean getting pre-qualified at Focus on Energy, then finding a HEAR-registered retailer. Locally, that will mean Van Vreede’s or Menard’s. But, if you’re willing to drive further afield, there are other options. (Also, please note: this won’t be an instant rebate, so you will need to pay full price for the appliance up front.)

How to get a $1799 stove for $159

In practice, here is what this will look like… Let’s say that you are in the market to replace your gas stove with a new induction stove. First of all, great choice! Gas stoves not only run on climate change-causing fossil fuels, but they cause indoor air quality problems that harm children and others. Looking at Black Friday sales, we were able to find an IRA HEAR-eligible induction stove/electric oven combo that ordinarily sells for $1799 for $999. With HEAR, you can get either a $499.50 or $840.00 rebate check depending on your qualified household income. So, that could potentially mean getting a $1799 stove for $159 and tax! That’s more than 90% off!

Installing an induction stove can mean rewiring your kitchen. If that’s the case, then the HEAR rebate also has you covered. Depending on eligibility, you can get up to $6,500 in rebates for rewiring your electrical system and upgrading your electrical panel. If that’s something you will need to do, then you will need to find a HEAR-registered electrical contractor to get started.
