The Three Phases of Energy Efficiency Upgrades and Electrification

1. Establish a baseline

You can’t change what you can’t measure! The first step to any change is seeing where you stand. In the context of home energy efficiency, that means getting a home energy assessment. This will help you identify your building’s “problem areas.” Maybe your attic insulation could be more robust. Perhaps there are gaps along your windows that would benefit from air sealing. A home energy assessment is the key to finding these issues before you move on to step 2!

Next Steps:
  1. You can combine this step with the next by using the HOMES 101 rebate. This can save you up to $10,000! Not sure what HOMES is? Check out our HOMES 101 page. The good news is that everyone is eligible to some degree. If your income is at or below 80% of the median, Focus on Energy will help cover the cost of the energy assessment (up to $500).
  2. If you’re not interested in the HOMES rebate, you can find a qualified home energy assessor at Focus on Energy.

2. Upgrade your home’s energy efficiency

Before you think about changing your home’s systems, it’s smart to maximize its efficiency. You don’t want to be heating and cooling air only to let it take off through the nearest available gap, leaving you uncomfortable and your wallet lighter!

Next Steps:

There are a variety of rebates that are designed to help you make your home more comfortable, healthier, and more energy efficient. These are local, state, and federal programs. Click below for more information!

3. Electrify your home!

The third and final phase is to begin replacing appliances and adding new capacities. This may require, for example, making sure your home is ready for additional electrical load! Or, you may need new wiring in your garage to accommodate an electric vehicle.

The pathway to home electrification will take a while. Whether you’re ready to make the transition will depend on a lot of factors. However, as you plan ahead, keep in mind that there are rebates available to make the transition more affordable.

Next Steps:

The HEAR rebate is the primary rebate designed for electrification. You can learn about HEAR–and other tax credits and rebates related to upgrading electric appliances here:
