Homeowner / Electric Vehicles (EVs)
Benefits
- EVs cost less than half as much as internal combustion engine cars to “fuel” per year, (link).
- No exhaust pipe means no auto exhaust! That means we can all enjoy cleaner air and a better environment, (we checked with MIT).
Facts
- Charging infrastructure is being built out along every important highway in Wisconsin, (here’s the map).
- EVs and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) come in the full range of vehicle options, from hatchbacks to SUVs.
- As of early 2026, there are more than 5.8 million EVs registered and on the roads in the US!

Things to know

- Shopping for an EV or PHEV is like shopping for any other vehicle. Consider your needs, look at your options, and then test drive some cars!
- Your car will almost certainly come with a Level 1 charger that can plug into a standard outlet. If you usually drive 20-30 miles a day, like most people, this may be sufficient (if you use a public EV charger now and then). Many people do this.
- You may want to upgrade to a Level 2 charger that can fully charge your car overnight. Until mid-2026, there is a 30% tax credit (up to $1000) that can be deducted from your bill at the time of purchase, see below.
Main Incentives
Need a car charger? Get 30% back (up to $1000) on your taxes using the 30C tax credit.
Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit, Personal (30C)
(Please note: On July 4th, this tax credit was eliminated by H.R. 1 (OBBBA). It will expire after June 30th, 2026.)
